St. Johns Wort
St. John’s wort (SJW) has been used for various ailments since the ancient Greeks; the Greek physician Hippocrates was one of the first to document its therapeutic use. Since the time of the Swiss physician Paracelsus (ca. 1540 C.E.) it was used to treat mental disorders.
St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum L., Fam. Clusiaceae) preparations consist of dried above-ground parts (flowers and stems), gathered during the flowering season. Preparations include aqueous extracts (teas), standardized extracts, alcoholic tinctures, dry extracts in capsules or tablets, and oil infusions (topical). Standardization is typically 0.3% hypericin, or 2- 4.5% hyperforin.
